A great way to start and maintain healthier diet habits is to follow the power of the Pyramid—The Food Pyramid. It divides foods into the five key groups you need for a healthy, happy life.
- Grains: The pyramid recommends at least half your grains be whole, and to eat at least 3 ounces of grains every day: whole grain breads, cereal, crackers, rice or pasta. It reminds us to always look for the word “whole” before the grain name.
- Vegetables: The pyramid tells us to vary our vegetables. And to eat more dark green and orange veggies, as well as dried beans and peas.
- Fruits: The pyramid encourages us to eat a variety of fruits. They can be fresh, frozen, canned or dried. But, go easy on fruit juices as they can be high in sugar.
- Milk: The pyramid stresses the importance of calcium-rich foods. For milk, it recommends low-fat or fat-free milk. And, if you can’t drink milk, choose lactose-free products or other calcium sources. ***BRIANNAS Fact: There are a total of ten BRIANNAS Salad Dressings that are lactose free!
- Meat & Beans: The pyramid reminds us to go lean on our protein. Choose low-fat or lean meats and poultry, then enjoy it baked, broiled or grilled. Try to vary your choices, and consume more fish, beans, peas, nuts and seeds.
It’s important to remember—this is just the “tip” of the pyramid. There is much more information available to you to help you on the road to healthy eating and living. If you’d like to know more, visit the official
